I Discovered ARTfarm, A Magical Spot In St. Croix
While vacationing on St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands over the Christmas holidays, we prepared most of our meals at the house in which we stayed, using fresh, local ingredients. I was told about a farmstand on the south shore of the island, part of the organic enterprise known as ARTfarm, where I purchased fresh salad greens, herbs, and other wonderful fruits and vegetables. I asked if I might be able to tour the farm gardens and I was pleasantly surprised to be reunited with Christina Frederick Gasperi, who used to work for my company several years ago. Christina and her husband Luca, both artists, are now the owners of this three-generation family farm. The Gasperi family immigrated to the U.S. Virgin Islands from Milan, Italy in the 1960s to join the Howard and Mary Wall family in operating their extensive cattle ranch on large land holdings along the South Shore of St. Croix. Luca’s father, Enrico, managed Castle Nugent Farms, a Senepol beef cattle ranch of genetic breeding stock on 3,000 acres owned by the Wall family. Today, Enrico still loves to farm and his wife, Valeria, runs Longford Hideaway, a bed and breakfast at the farm. It was a very pleasant visit!
