Take Your Daughter and Son to Work Day 2013
Thursday, April 25th, was Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, an educational program in the United States where parents are encouraged to bring their children to work. This extremely popular program was started in 1993 by feminist and activist, Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation for Women. Originally called ‘Take Our Daughters To Work,’ it was expanded to include boys in 2003. We, at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, really have fun preparing for this day. We had a total of 47 kids RSVP, however, due to the statewide test that was scheduled on that day, 35 children were able to attend. Two separate schedules were planned – one for ages 8 – 10 and the other for ages 11 – 16. The groups traveled between various activities including interview your parent, crafting, gardening, baking, yoga (with my niece, Sophie Herbert), and video interviews, all being very well organized and managed. From 9:30 in the morning until 4:45 in the afternoon, the children were led to various areas of my offices and were totally engrossed with every event – a most successful day!
