A Guest Blog From Navajo Nation
Jen Sawyer, a Producer's Assistant on my television show, traveled to Navajo Nation this past summer as part of a Global Outreach program and would like to share this blog. Please enjoy her photos of a bit of our spectacular Southwest. And what an honorable way to spend vacation time!
In June, I had the opportunity to join a group from my alma mater, Fordham University, to go on a trip to beautiful Navajo nation. Spanning Northeastern Arizona, Southeastern Utah, and Northwestern New Mexico, Navajo land extends over 27,000 miles and is home to several national monuments, tribal parks, and historic sites. The Navajo project is a part of Fordham’s Global Outreach program, a cultural immersion and service program that allows Fordham students to learn about various social issues and injustices affecting communities in the United States and countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. I was involved with GO as an undergraduate, so I was thrilled to come back this summer as a team chaperone. Our group spent two weeks living and working on the Navajo reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico and Bluff, Utah. Throughout the trip, I was continuously inspired by the Navajo, or Diné people’s deep honor and reverence for the earth and its resources. It was quite the learning experience!
