The Big Bend Gardens
An expression of historical preservation, a passion for art, and a fondness for beautiful garden spaces can be found at The Big Bend in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
The Big Bend is the home of George “Frolic” Weymouth - artist, conservationist and Chairman of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art. The 18th century manor house sits at the foot of a hill overlooking the Brandywine River. Once owned by the Lenni Lenape Indians, the nearly 300-acre property passed through several hands, including those of William Penn, before the house and barn were built on the land in the 1780s. After Frolic purchased the house in 1961, he lovingly restored it to its original beauty, adding majestic gardens and whimsical art pieces throughout.
Last week, I had the pleasure of touring The Big Bend with Frolic’s close friends, Carlton Cropper and Michael Mattson, and his head gardener, David Brown. Here are some photos from my visit.
