I love technology and am always excited to test new devices and learn about the latest features and applications. It's especially fun when my grandchildren can learn along with me.
Recently, our friends from DJI, a market leader in easy-to-fly drones and aerial photography systems, came to the farm with their newest model drone, the DJI Mini 2. They also brought the RYZE TELLO EDU which is equipped with DJI technology. I have flown several different drones over the years, but it was so nice to see Jude and Truman learn basic drone movements, operate the controls, and then fly them over the farm - first the TELLO EDU and then the more advanced Mini 2. They both did excellently and had a great time.
Here are some photos, enjoy.
My grandchildren love learning new things, so they were very excited to come up to my Bedford, New York farm to learn how to fly drones. These are two Tello EDU drones, which are perfect for beginner pilots.
DJI Senior Communications Manager, Patrick Santucci and Maria Jung, DJI Project Manager – North America set up all the drones on the terrace parterre outside my Winter House kitchen.
Here’s Patrick showing Truman the basic anatomy and functions of the Tello EDU.
Truman was eager to fly the drone – here he is flying it high into the sky. This Tello EDU has 13-minutes of flight time,
100M of flight distance,
720P HD transmission,
two antennas that make video transmission extra stable, and a high-capacity battery.
Drones are basically remote controlled flying objects that can record video, take photos and in some cases, deliver objects. Drones are becoming more accessible to a wide range of operators and are able to fly lower and in more directions, allowing them to navigate hard-to-access areas. Here is one of the drones flying close to the terrace taking photos from above.
Here is another view of Truman piloting the drone up into the skies over Cantitoe Corners – he is a natural.
Jude flew another Tello EDU. Here she is with Maria bringing the drone closer to take a photo of her showing a “peace” sign with her hand.
The EDU can also be directed to do various tricks. Hard to tell in this photo, but Jude is doing flips with the Tello EDU.
It was amazing to see how quickly the children learned how to maneuver the drones. It was also a good day to fly – not too much wind.
This is my Mavic Pro – it has 27-minutes of flight time, can go up to 40mph in sport mode without wind, has 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, and shoots up to 4K video, and 12MP photos. I’ve been using drones for years, and have flown a variety of different kinds.
This is DJI’s newest drone, the Mini 2. This drone weighs under 249 grams, folds up easily for transport, and is also perfect for beginners or travelers.
This DJI Mini 2 provides a max battery life of 31-minutes and can resist 29 to 38kph winds. It can also handle a max altitude of more than 13,000 feet.
With the 4K mini camera, improved controller, boosted range, crisp, easy to zoom features, the DJI Mini 2 is among the top lightweight drones available today – be sure to go to the DJI web site to learn more.
Here, the children are flying my Mavic Mini. They are very quick learners, and were able to handle the more advanced models. They wanted to try them all!
Some of the photos jude and Truman took with the drones include this one of themselves at the controls just above the terrace parterre. I am taking photos of the drones in the sky.
Here’s another one of the paddocks and my stable.
And here is a view high above my Summer House with the sunken garden behind it. The drones are very steady – these images are so crisp.
The drone also captured this closer view of the front of the Summer House and the deciduous round hornbeams, Carpinus.
Do you recognize this photo? It is my espalier of dwarf apples behind my carport.
And then back again above the terrace. Jude and Truman are now drone pilots. What a fun and informative afternoon.
And here we all are, masked of course. The world of technology is evolving every day and shows no signs of slowing down. Thank you Patrick, Maria, and DJI!
