If you're in or around Northern Westchester, New York, and are looking for a new hair salon, I encourage you to make an appointment at "From the Roots."
During this pandemic, while many of us have been sheltering-at-home, entrepreneurs Megan Szatmari and Caroline King, have been busy building and opening their new hair studio - an eco-friendly establishment in downtown Katonah. Over the last five years, both Megan and Caroline have styled my hair for various media appearances, photoshoots, and videos, so I was so excited to learn they had opened a shop not far from my Bedford farm. "From the Roots" opened its doors earlier this month, and yesterday, we made a brief visit to see how it's doing.
Enjoy these photos.
The salon is located on a quaint street of small businesses not far from the train station. Katonah is one of three hamlets within the town of Bedford in Westchester County. It is named for Chief Katonah, an American Indian from whom the land of Bedford was purchased. Originally founded with the name Whitlockville, the town changed its name, and later was moved to its present site in 1897.
“From the Roots” opened on July 1st under all the recommended health organization guidelines for maintaining a safe environment for all of its clients.
This space was a former stationery store and needed quite a bit of renovation before it opened. Here is a photo just before work began.
Here is one mid-process – the flooring is in and the back wall’s lower cabinets are installed.
Here, Megan and Caroline look at the new walls and back of the shop as the transformation continues.
And now it’s all complete with bright cheerful colors and plenty of room. This is Caroline, a master colorist, and stylist. She greeted us at the front of the salon when we arrived. Both Caroline and Megan merged more than 20 years of combined experience in styling and coloring expertise to start their new adventure.
To the left of the front desk is a small sitting area for waiting clients.
For now, the salon can safely accommodate one person every other station under proper social distancing guidelines. As a small business, Megan and Caroline adhere very closely to safety recommendations to keep everyone healthy.
All their scissors, brushes, and other tools are kept very clean and sharp at all times. Here are just some of their tools neatly arranged in a moveable cart.
Megan is a master colorist. Here, she works on a client’s hair in the back section of the salon.
Both clients and the staff at “From the Roots” wear appropriate masks. Here, Megan also wears gloves while washing her client’s hair.
Hair shampoos and conditioners are displayed on the wall, so clients can see exactly what products are used.
A color bar at the back displays all the necessary hair color formulas.
Sinks are positioned a safe distance apart. This client, Sarah, said she felt so relaxed, she was falling asleep.
Once Sarah’s hair was washed, she moves into a chair for her blowout with Caroline.
Meanwhile, Megan wipes down this chair thoroughly in preparation for the next wash.
What Megan and Caroline are greatly proud of is their involvement with Green Circle Salons, the world’s first sustainable solution dedicated to recycling, recovering, and repurposing beauty waste from salons and spas.
Green Circle Salons’ receptacles for hair and color waste are located in the back of the salon for collections.
Other waste materials are collected and recycled at various treatment stations. Here is a bin for collecting hair foils typically used for applying highlights.
A chart is hung on a wall to indicate what can be recycled and how best it should be collected and packaged for pickup.
“From the Roots” provides all hair color services, hair painting, foils, haircutting and styling, and extensions. This client wanted to brighten her blonde hair with some highlights. She got balayage streaks of a lighter shade to add dimension and shine.
On this client – a full foilayage, which is a combination of foils and balayage. The process involves hand-painting highlights throughout the hair before wrapping small sections in sheets of foil.
And this client went strawberry blonde with a tousled look. To see more of their finished hairstyles, follow the Instagram page @FromtheRoots.141
Recently, Megan blew out my hair for this QVC “Christmas in July” LIVE broadcast – did you catch it last week? If not, you can still see many of my new holiday decorations on the QVC web site. Megan usually comes to my home very early in the morning, so I am ready for a full day of shooting.
Here is another blow out by Megan done before this Amazon LIVE pets show. This was another very full day. I do many different shoots in one day so it is important that my hair looks its best for as many hours as possible. My dear Empress Qin’s coat looks pretty also, after a good grooming.
And here are Megan and Caroline – without masks only for this photo. I wish you both the best of luck with “From the Roots!” It is a great addition to our community. See you soon! And for more information, please go to the “From the Roots” web site.
