Using My Multi-Purpose Heavy Duty Garden Totes Around the Farm
If you’re busy doing chores around the house and in the garden, I hope you have my Multi-Purpose Reusable Heavy Duty Tote Bag - it’s so useful for carrying, organizing, and storing so many things indoors and out.
This is a very busy time around my Bedford, New York farm and the outdoor grounds crew has been doing a superb job getting things in order. One of our many weekly tasks is mowing all the lawns, paddocks, and hayfields around the property. Fortunately, we have several Kubota mowers to get the job quickly and timely. We also use my Multi-Purpose Totes for collecting grass clippings and all the pulled weeds - roomy, light and so, so durable, these bags are must-haves in the home and yard.
Enjoy these photos.
This is my Martha Stewart Multi-Purpose Heavy-Duty Garden Tote Bag in slate – available on Amazon. I love this bag and use it all the time on my farm. It’s made from rugged, rip-resistant woven polypropylene fabric – perfect for holding anything and everything. Each bag measures approximately 20-inches wide by 20-inches long by 24-inches tall.
I have lots of these bags for the crew – they love the portability of this tote. It has a simple semi-rigid pop-up assembly that folds flat for compact storage.
There are sturdy handles on either side for convenient carrying.
And the mouth opening is extra large for easy filling and emptying.
The straps are reinforced and wrap all around the bag for extra support.
And the shoulder straps are long to make it easy to throw over the shoulder if needed.
These bags are very useful in the garden when mowing. Carlos places a couple bag a few feet apart along the carriage road, so there is always one nearby for emptying grass clippings from the mower.
This is our Kubota WGC6-21 push mower. The 21-inch mower provides really sharp cutting and easy bagging. We use a lot of Kubota equipment on the farm for all our big jobs.
Here’s Carlos mowing the lawn just down the carriage road from my tree peony and azalea garden. This mower has a powerful Kawasaki engine, cast aluminum wheels and decks, and edge guards to protect the machine.
Nearby is also the donkey paddock. Here’s Truman “TJ” Junior looking on as he snacks on a bit of hay from the manger.
Here are Rufus and Billie also watching the noisy activity.
The Kubota has a large 2.5-bushel grass bag. It empties so easily into the wide mouth of my Multi-Purpose Garden Tote.
Once full, the totes are carried to the nearby dump truck and emptied. These bags are so durable, they can hold more than 960 pounds!
All this grass is just from one area along the carriage road from the Summer House to my stable.
All the grass clippings are transported to the compost pile where they will be turned into nutrient-rich compost and mulch for use as dressing in the gardens. We are very eco-friendly here at the farm and work hard to use, reuse, repurpose, and recycle everything we can.
The next area on the list to mow – around my pool. Hopefully, it will be a nice Memorial Day Weekend, and I’ll have some time to swim.
These Multi-Purpose Tote Bags are not only great for collecting the grass clippings and weeds while gardening, but they’re also very handy for storing towels, toys, and other supplies inside and outside the home. And, they’re completely reusable and waterproof.
Carlos starts to mow along one side of the enclosed pool yard by the hedge of purple columnar beech trees, Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple’ – a splendid tree with deep-purple foliage that holds its color all season. This hedge looks so gorgeous against the green grass.
When mowing, remember to avoid scalping the grass, which means cutting it too short. A scalped lawn is vulnerable to grass burn, diseases, and weed infestation. Scalped turf also tends to be more weak and sparse. Grass that’s consistently cut too short will have a poorly developed root system, which makes the lawn more susceptible to serious damage from drought or high temperatures.
Another tip is to adjust the mower height throughout the growing season. Shift higher in summer and allow the grass to grow longer. Taller grass helps shade the soil, which prevents weed growth and slows water evaporation. Taller grass also develops deeper roots, which help the lawn to withstand drought better. In late autumn lower the cutting deck for the last mowing of the season to help prevent snow mold from forming on the grass.
And try to always mow when the grass is dry. We only mow dry grass at the farm. Mowing a wet lawn doesn’t harm the grass, but it can fill and clog a mower, and make the cut look uneven.
Carlos places bags at each corner of the pool yard for easy access when emptying the mower bag. I like to use slate bags here at my farm but it also comes in mint green, bay leaf green, and black.
Carlos fills another bag with clippings.
Look how much the bag holds – Carlos can empty several times before starting a new bag.
And then it’s off to the compost pile. If you’re looking for the perfect multi-purpose heavy-duty tote to use in and around your home, this bag is it. Oh my goodness! My mother bought a set of these totes and gave me one of them. I love it!! My favorite part is the handle on the bottom. I am short, so that small feature makes emptying it so easy, especially when it is full and heavy. It makes cleaning up outside so easy!!

That is good information about mowing lawns and length of grass.Carlos is doing a great job. These are beautiful pictures.
I don't have outside work to care for.

Do you ever leave some of the grass clippings on the lawn to disintegrate on their own? Or is all of your grass too high (too many clippings) to do that? We just cut one-third of our grass at each mowing and leave the clippings on the lawn as a natural fertilizer.
I always wondered about your garden tote bags. I finally went ahead and bought one this year and they are everything you have said they are. Absolutely terrific! Many thanks. Happy swimming over the Memorial Day holiday! Stay safe and healthy.

Hi Martha,
I bought a couple of these totes when I had my rental and used one outside and the other inside. When I was ready to move to a more permanent place, I could fit most of my linens in one and my very strong son loaded it and then unloaded it from the moving trailer. After I unpacked my linens, I gave the tote to him to use in his yard. He loves it! Since I don't do much gardening anymore, I can put the few clippings in one of my tub trugs, and then empty that into a trash bag. When I did a lot of gardening though, your totes made my work a lot easier. Trish
