While we’re all trying to abide by stay-at-home guidelines, it’s still very important to get in some good, safe exercise every day.
If you follow my Instagram page @MarthaStewart48, you may have noticed I added a new piece of exercise equipment to my personal gym. Some time ago, I got a Tonal home fitness system - a digital strength training apparatus that works with electromagnetic weightlifting technology and interactive workouts. Although compact and streamlined, the piece needed a flat, seven-foot-tall wall for installation - something my gym did not have because of its angled ceilings. To accommodate it, I came up with a clever solution - to build a free-standing wall on one side of my gym that worked perfectly.
Enjoy these photos.
One of the things I do to stay healthy and fit is to make sure I exercise every single day. Aside from eating right and getting enough sleep, exercise keeps me trim and boosts my energy. I ride my horses, work in the garden, and do fitness training in my personal gym here at my farm.
I selected a space in my gym for my new Tonal home fitness system, but because the ceilings are angled along the entire length of the room, I had to come up with a way to accommodate the equipment.
Here, one can see how sloped the ceilings are. The Tonal needed a straight wall that was at least seven feet tall.
So, I decided to build a wall just for the Tonal. Here is the frame for the machine. It measures seven-feet-tall by 40-inches wide.
These middle 2-by-4-inch studs are 16-inches apart – perfect for this machine. Tonal can also be installed on walls that have studs 19-inches and 24-inches apart.
The frame was backed with 3/4-inch A1 birch plywood.
Birch was also used for the front and the sides of the new wall. Birch is a hard, durable wood, with an even texture that is good for both paints and stains.
Trim work was added along with the appropriate holes for electrical wiring.
Once the entire wall was built, it was painted my signature “Bedford Gray” to match the rest of the gym.
The metal frame for the Tonal was then screwed into the new wall – it fits perfectly.
Here it is with the wiring positioned 22-and-a-half-inches from the ground.
The Tonal is an all-in-one weight fitness system, which relies on electromagnetic weightlifting technology to help build strength and stamina without bulky workout equipment.
It attaches easily to the base and when completely closed, it is as thin as a flatscreen television.
It looks as if the wall was always here – it’s a great solution for any space that needs a straight vertical surface.
There is also space behind the wall for storage or access to shelving.
The Tonal is equipped with an integrated 24-inch interactive display screen for viewing fitness programs and working with virtual personal trainers.
Its resistance cables go up to 200-pounds, and the adjustable arms enable one to get full-body fitness training for the lower and upper body all on one machine.
It also comes with a bench and a mat that can easily be stored until the Tonal unit.
I am excited to use my Tonal home fitness system – stay tuned for more photos. What exercise keeps you busy and fit during this time at home? Share your comments with me below.
