If you’re shopping for outdoor entertaining supplies, innovative gardening tools, and other outdoor activity gear, be sure to stop in at Macy's and visit STORY, the ever-evolving concept shop.
Here I am with the founder of STORY, Rachel Shechtman. We’re standing on the ground floor of Macy’s Herald Square just before viewing Outdoor STORY. Rachel and I have known each other for several years. Rachel is a fourth generation entrepreneur who loves finding the next big thing as much as she enjoys sharing it with others. Her vision for STORY was to create a retail concept that could connect brands and consumers by using the point of view of a magazine, changing displays like an art gallery, and selling merchandise like a store. https://www.macys.com/social/story/
The Outdoor STORY experience features this greenhouse using Tetra Contour lighting by GE – it looks like neon lighting strips, but they’re actually all LED lights. https://products.currentbyge.com/sign-lighting/tetra-contour
The scenes are designed to “bring the outdoors in”. Over the next two months, Macy’s will also offer more than 250 events, ranging from indoor gardening workshops and terrarium-making classes to outside activities such as kayaking, depending on the location. (Photo courtesy of STORY)
Here I am with Jeff Gennette, chairman, and CEO of Macy’s, Inc. inside the life-sized wooden jeep.
Another area features a living room complete with a “grass” covered couch. (Photo courtesy of STORY)
Even the end-tables and lamps feature the outdoor theme. This is the Miracle-Gro Twelve Indoor Growing System, specially designed for growing a wide variety of leafy greens, herbs, and flowers like lettuce, kale, mint, basil, and marigolds indoors. It’s easy-to-use with a compact and thoughtful design that fits anywhere.
Here, I am joined by Outdoor STORY designer, David Stark – he did a great job coming up with all these fun and inspiring outdoor scenes. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Macy’s, Inc.)
Each area provided interactive displays for visitors to photograph and post on their personal media platforms. Here is an Outdoor STORY picnic set-up. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Macy’s, Inc.)
And here I am in front of some of my products sold exclusively at Macy’s, such as my Marinade Serving Tray – perfect for even marinading and transporting straight to the grill. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Macy’s, Inc.)
I took this photo of all these fun flip-flops arranged on the wall. They are all American made by Tidal New York, a company that focuses on creating ethically and locally-sourced flip flops.

Everyone had so much fun taking snapshots at each of the interactive stations. These two really look like they’re sitting inside a giant picnic basket.
Multiple copies of my book, “Martha’s Flowers”, were on display for purchase.
I loved the “outdoor kitchen” – all dressed in green.
On this shelf, my book, “Martha Stewart’s Vegetables: Inspired Recipes and Tips for Choosing, Cooking, and Enjoying the Freshest Seasonal Flavors”.
There was also a tabled completely dedicated to products for children. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for Macy’s, Inc.)
I met Mikaila Ulmer, founder of Me & the Bees Lemonade. Mikaila is a young entrepreneur who has been building her product and business since she was only four-years-old when she set out to develop a beverage in an effort to helping save our honeybee populations. Read her inspiring story on her web site. https://www.meandthebees.com/pages/about-us
