There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep after a long, hard day.
The focal point of every bedroom is the bed and I always take special care in all my bedrooms to make sure each one is as comfortable and as beautiful as possible. I invest in excellent quality mattresses and I always use the finest bedding. Up at Skylands, my home in Maine, everyone is busy preparing for my annual summer visit - cleaning every room, washing all the dishes and polishing all the silver, and of course, making all the beds for myself and my guests. This year, I decided it was time to change all the mattress pads. A mattress pad helps protect the mattress from spills, stains, and general wear and tear, but it also provides additional padding and comfort. I use my own Dream Science Waterproof Mattress Pads from my collection exclusively at Macy’s - they’re so comfortable and easy to fit onto any twin, queen or king-sized bed.
Here are some photos of my new mattress pads and some tips for making a bed that is comfortable and luxurious. And don't forget, you can find all your bedding needs from my Martha Stewart Collection at Macy's.
All these mattress pads arrived last week at Skylands. While I am busy packing at my Bedford, New York farm, Cheryl and Gretchen are busy getting everything ready up in Maine – there are many, many beds to make for all my summer guests.
I love these mattress pads from Macy’s. These luxe mattress pads from Dream Science are designed with a super-soft cotton cover and quiet waterproof backing.
From above, one can see the high loft framed baffle-box design.
When buying a mattress pad, always look for the best quality materials, These are made with 100-percent cotton with a thread count of 300. And, it has hypoallergenic polyester fiberfill – perfect for those sensitive to allergens.
I also like to fit my beds with lamb’s wool mattress covers. Look closely and the mattress pad fits perfectly over the cover, keeping everything in place.
These pads fit mattresses up to 22-inches deep, which means it will stay on securely and not ride up because it is too short.
And, it fits snug around the bed – it has strong, long-lasting elasticity all the way around the mattress.
These pads also have excellent coverage – the entire top of the bed is protected with the quilted padding.
This is one of many beds at Skylands – a queen-sized bed in my main house. A regular queen-sized mattress measures 60-inches by 80-inches. Some antique queen mattresses measure 57-inches by 76-inches. The mattress pad fits just right.
Here is the bed all made – it’s so inviting. The pad, along with the cover add softness and comfort, especially for anyone with pressure point pain.
This bedroom is above my stable – it also needs a new mattress pad. When choosing any mattress pad or cover, be sure to use the dimensions of the mattress itself – not the bed frame. The majority of good-quality mattresses have a lifespan between seven and 10 years, but it can last beyond that with good care.
Here is the same bed with the new mattress pad in place – it’s a perfect fit.
And here is the bed all dressed in cheerful pink, red and cream bedding.
In the bedroom next door, white sheets are used instead of pink – I always choose bedding that is comfortable and practical.
This bedroom is in what I call the “dorm” in the main house – there are several bedrooms in this area – perfect for my daughter and her children when they are at Skylands.
Cheryl and Gretchen dressed this bed in bright white. When making the bed, do you make hospital corners? Many like the feel of the tightly tucked in sheets. I like a looser corner with only the sides tucked, so it is easy to pull the sheets up if needed.
Here is a queen-sized bed over my garage – now with its new mattress pad. And don’t forget – it is always recommended to rotate your mattress regularly. Rotating and fluffing will keep it in the best condition.
Another clean, fresh bed. All my sheets are ironed after they are washed. It is a time-consuming chore but makes the bed all the more comfortable. I am fortunate to have my bedding at home changed every couple of days. How often do you change your bedding? I am interested to know. Share your comments below.
