Celebrate Mother's Day with the MarthaStewart.TV App
Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 12th - just a week away. I always look forward to spending this special occasion with my daughter, Alexis, and her beautiful children, Jude and Truman.
My mother, Martha Kostyra, or Big Martha, was the Kostyra family matriarch. As many of you know, she often appeared with me on my television programs. In fact, while dining out, running errands, or exercising at the YMCA, fans would often approach my mother for her autograph. Cooking was a huge part of Mom’s life and she loved sharing her recipes. The recipes I learned from her are among our most requested year after year. They include traditional Polish dishes such as stuffed cabbage, sweet and savory pierogis, and comfort food favorites such as roast loin of pork, borscht, meatloaf, and macaroni and cheese. My mother’s dessert recipes are equally mouthwatering - spice cake, white cake, lemon meringue cake, and classics like blueberry buckle and rice pudding.
All my mother’s appearances – and the recipes she was so pleased to share – are available to watch on the Martha Stewart.TV App. Download the App on your phone, tablet, or streaming device. You’ll find full episodes of Martha Stewart Living, The Martha Stewart Show, as well as one-hour holiday specials. To subscribe and save, use promo code MOM19.

My mother’s recipes are among the most requested by my readers and viewers. My mother’s potato pierogis are my personal favorites.
My mother made mashed potatoes with butter, cream cheese, and whole milk. In this segment, I am teaching Snoop Dogg how to make Big Martha’s indulgent side dish.
What pairs best with mashed potatoes? Big Martha’s meatloaf, of course. Her recipe’s finely minced vegetables keep the texture light and moist.
My mother’s roast pork loin with red cabbage is a delicious, easy-to-prepare family meal.
Mom’s recipe for the comfort food classic macaroni and cheese was inherited from her mother. It includes a small amount of tomato paste for flavor.
My mother was always enthusiastic to open her recipe box and share family recipes, including a Polish version of stuffed cabbage called “golabki.”
Growing up, we had lots of homemade cookies, cakes, and pies. Mom always used blueberries from our backyard in this buckle recipe.
Like many families, we have special holiday baking traditions. We always baked and served sweet stollen for Christmas.
Polish chrusciki are made with twists of dough fried in hot oil and dusted with confectioners’ sugar. Stacked on a cake stand, they make a very pretty presentation.
In this segment, Mom and I made her delectable spice cake. Her secret: an orange glaze and a dusting of confectioners’ sugar.
My television program was, at times, a family affair. Here, my niece, Sophie, poses while I cut a cake to celebrate Mother’s birthday during one of our special episodes.
Mom remained active and independent well into her 90s. I was so pleased that she was able to visit the set often and share her enthusiasm for life with our audience.
Here we are at the groundbreaking for the Mount Sinai Center for Living in New York City. It was my honor to dedicate this center to my mom, who always inspired me to be physically active and mentally engaged.
In this segment, an audience member asked what my siblings and I did for Mom on Mother’s Day. We often tried to serve Mom breakfast in bed, but she always woke up much earlier than the rest of us.
A slice of carrot cake – another sweet treat my mother especially enjoyed!
After my mother's passing, my staff and I put together this tribute to share with family, friends, and fans. To all of the mothers and mother figures, I wish you a lovely Mother’s Day.
