Easter and the hope it represents for a season of rebirth and change is one of my favorite days of the year. And, it’s coming up - next Sunday, April 21st.
I also love Easter traditions - especially my big annual egg hunt. Last year, I dyed 288-eggs (that’s 24-dozen!) and hid them all around my stable for the little children to find. I expect to decorate the same number or even more this Easter. Following the hunt, I host a holiday brunch for family and friends. I try to make each celebration a bit different from the year before, but always include recipes my mother passed down and shared on my television programs - favorites such as glazed smoked ham, kielbasa, creamed spinach, and scalloped potatoes. On this segment, two young neighbors join me in my Turkey Hill kitchen to decorate eggs with adhesive vinyl letters. You can use gel paste food coloring to create custom colors.
Natural materials yield beautiful results. Create this mottled look by wrapping eggs in onion skins, secure with cheesecloth, then boil in water and vinegar for 20-minutes.
Can you believe each of these beautiful eggs was dyed using common ingredients? Coffee, cabbage, turmeric, and beets can transform white-shelled eggs into many different colors and shades.
To prevent eggs from spoiling, blow out the contents with an egg blower. These beautiful gold and pink gilded eggs grace my Easter vignettes year after year.
I adore gilding, but I love glitter even more! With craft glue and glitter, you can apply designs to selected areas, or cover the entire egg.
These bright, intricately patterned eggs are created reusing scraps of silk ties and scarves.
This is me making an “egg-trance”. My creative television staff transformed an Arne Jacobsen egg-shaped chair into a one-woman Easter parade!
Renowned chocolatier Jacques Torres is famous for his elaborate creations, including giant chocolate eggs and rabbits.

Glazed Ham 101 is one of our classic recipes – sliced and served with biscuits, it’s the centerpiece of the Easter buffet or table.
On this show, expert baker Rose Levy-Beranbaum shares a bundt cake recipe made with heavy cream. Garnish and serve with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh berries to make a delectable dessert.
My mother, Big Martha, visited our sets many times and was a favorite guest. Here, we are demonstrating a Kostyra family Easter tradition – how to make sweet raisin-filled babka.
For a sweet ending to the Easter or Passover meal, lightly baked meringue is crowned with lemon curd. It is also very delicious filled with jam or fresh berries!
The late, and outrageous, comedienne Joan Rivers kept our audiences in stitches during her visits. To celebrate Passover, we garnished matzo with chocolate and dried fruit.
Another delicious dessert – sea-salt topped caramel-chocolate matzo for Passover… or any time.
Author Jonathan Safran Foer presents his recipe for vegetarian matzo ball soup. I was honored his grandmother, Ethel, joined the segment to show how to make light and fluffy matzo balls.
Cookbook author and journalist Joan Nathan is a frequent guest on my programs. Together, we made this escarole soup and Passover popovers.
