I love all holidays, but they’re even more fun now with my grandchildren, Jude and Truman. Easter is a specially good time, and it will be here before you know it.
Every year, I bake more than 100 sugar cookies for all my guests on Easter Sunday. I spend a couple of nights preparing the dough, cutting out the shapes, and decorating them with the colors of spring. Over time, many of you have asked about my cookie decorating techniques. I am happy to say I have now developed a foolproof recipe for making these Easter themed treats - it’s in the April issue of “Living”, which hits newsstands this week!
Here are some photos, and a special cookie decorating video - you can also see it on my Instagram page @marthastewart48. Enjoy.
I love making these giant egg shaped sugar cookies – they’re about seven-inches across.
I also make other spring and Easter themed shapes – here are some flowers and little sitting rabbits.
The April 2019 issue of our magazine, “Living”, provides my foolproof recipes for creating the dough and the royal icing, so your cookies come out perfect for your holiday brunch.
You’ll also learn some design tips for decorating – the important thing is to avoid bubbles. On these cookies, I used bright white and bright yellow for polka dots and egg “yolks”.
Last Easter, I made dozens and dozens of egg cookies with these fun “yolk” centers. See exactly how it’s done in the video below.
I also made yellow chicken cookies and whimsical pink chicken cookies.
These little rabbit cookies were dipped in royal icing and then left as is.
And these bunnies have light pink ears, eyes and tails. After they’re decorated, it is important to let them dry completely – overnight – and uncovered.
You can also make colored chevron designs. These cookies were from another Easter celebration. I choose a different color palette every year.
I’ve come up with many color combinations – our April issue gives you the recipes for four different colors inspired by the eggs from my very own chickens.
You can also combine colors to make a tie-dye effect, like the rabbit cookies on the left. The tiny round cookies were made using the leftover dough.
Display a mix of cookies on large serving trays – they look so inviting, especially to the youngest guests.
These cookies, from yet another Easter celebration, are all decorated with polka dots – some on iced cookies, and others on the cookies themselves. I hope I’ve inspired you to make some homemade sugar cookies for your Easter celebration. Share your comments with me in the section below. And enjoy the video!
