My Super Bowl Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, Part Two
No matter where the Big Game is held, there’s always so much to do during Super Bowl weekend.
During my brief stay in Atlanta, Georgia, we met lots of great people, including a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and a young rap singer and songwriter. We also ate the most delicious game-day foods - pit smoked barbecue, chicken and ribs, and the best sides to go with them. And of course, we enjoyed a fun game, right from the 35-yard line. Here are more of my photos - enjoy.
So many fun people were in Atlanta last weekend. Here I am with former professional football player, Andre Darnell Reed. He played wide receiver in the National Football League for 16-seasons – 15 with the Buffalo Bills and one with the Washington Redskins. And in 2014, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
This is Andre’s Hall of Fame ring – only 180 Hall of Famers alive today.
We also met the young rap singer and songwriter, Silento, and his little sister. There were so many celebrities and performers in town for the game.
Atlanta is, by far, a New England Patriots-loving city. The night before the game, Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, hosted a big party.
So many people attended the gathering, including Jon Bon Jovi.
I also saw my friend, Dr. Oz, who was there with his wife, Lisa.
After the party, we went to Chops Lobster Bar, where we enjoyed the most amazing seafood, This is their shellfish tower with Maine lobster, shrimp, cold water oysters, and lump crab.
Here are my friends, Jane Heller and her husband, Steve Gerard, in front B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque on game day. I saw a news story on television about the restaurant the day before, and thought it would be a great place for lunch. We called, and they said to come at noon before it got too crowded.
We started with these crispy pork skins – go to my Instagram page @MarthaStewart48 to see my video – these pork skins were still crackling when they got to our table.
Here are Melissa and Jeff Sutherland. You may recall, Jeff runs a giant Christmas tree farm in Elk Creek, Virginia and planted hundreds of trees at my farm 10-years ago. Watch the video on my web site. https://www.marthastewart.com/251802/sutherland-trees
This is Christine Colaco. She helped us navigate our way through Atlanta and joined us all for this excellent lunch – the best barbecue in the state. B’s Cracklin’ Barbeque owner, Bryan Furman, wrote the message on the sign.
Here’s a fun snapshot of Jane and Steve ready for lunch.
The restaurant has three barbecue sauces – ketchup-based spicy, spicy vinegar, and peach mustard. We tried them all and they were all delicious.
Here I am with Bryan – he was so excited we came to his restaurant!
These are the cracklin’ sliders – this one with classic pulled pork, tossed in the signature BBQ sauce, topped with fried pork skins, and served with one side – collard greens.
This plate included chicken wings, pork, ribs, brisket, sides, and cornbread.
These are two of their signature sides – macaroni and cheese and collard greens.
Then it was game time! Here is the brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons football team. This stadium was designed by the firm, HOK, and includes an eight-panel retractable roof that resembles a pinwheel, and a glass wall that opens with the roof to allow in fresh air. The stadium itself is completely finished, but the perimeter of the stadium is unfinished, so it was very difficult to get through all the blocked roads and construction sites.
Here I am with my friend, Jane in front of the stadium. I’m wearing my quilted down short sleeve puffer jacket from my collection at QVC. It’s yarrow gold – I didn’t realize it was so close to the color of the Rams uniforms.
Once inside, I took a photo behind the football uniform mannequin.
We had lots of fun taking photos.
Here is the inside of the oculus retracting dome stadium. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium holds the record for the world’s largest video board at 62,350 square-feet, and is one of five stadiums in the NFL with a retractable roof.
The roof design includes eight triangular translucent panels, that when opened create the illusion of a bird’s wings extended. It was closed for most of the game. The giant halo video board surrounds the opening of the roof.
The two-million square-foot stadium includes 71-thousand seats and is 305-feet tall – that’s about 30-stories high.
Here’s a fun group photo of Christine, Steve, Jane, myself, Jeff and Melissa. Our seats were on the 35-yard line. We were surrounded by both Patriots and Rams fans.
Shortly before the game started, the roof was opened so all the spectators could see the planes flying overhead. Look at my Instagram page @MarthaStewart48 for more photos.
Here is Robert Kraft looking very happy watching from his box.
I love seeing the giant United States flag – it is always such a beautiful part of the pre-game ceremony.
This year, legendary R&B singer and seven-time Grammy winner, Gladys Knight, performed the national anthem – it was amazing.
The half time show featured some amazingly good pyrotechnics.
Here’s rapper and songwriter, Big Boi, on stage. The half time show also included American pop group Maroon 5, and Travis Scott.
Here is the stadium at night – all aglow with the winning New England Patriots colors after Super Bowl LIII.
Thanks to T-Mobile for including our recipe for baked-eggplant parmesan in their commercial – visits to our web site for the recipe soared after it aired. Have you tried our dish? Click on the link above and make it this weekend! You’ll love it.
