I always enjoy sharing my home for productive and inspiring business meetings.
Earlier this week, I welcomed a small group of colleagues to my Bedford, New York farm. It was the same day a third nor’easter in two weeks time charged through the Northeast with heavy wet snow and high winds. Fortunately all my guests made it safely. One of them was Kevin Sharkey, my dear friend and EVP Design Director at Sequential Brands Group. Kevin took a series of lovely photos during our gathering and short tour around the property - it’s always fun to view the familiar through someone else’s lens - enjoy these pictures.
And please visit Kevin’s Instagram page @SeenbySharkey for more interesting images.
On this morning, my longtime housekeeper, Laura, set another very pretty setting at my kitchen counter. Kevin took this photo from above looking down at the plates, cups and centerpiece.
Here is another beautiful photo taken by Kevin from above the counter looking down at the warm croissants from the Martha Stewart Cafe. http://www.marthastewartcafe.com/
We have about two more weeks until Easter – in anticipation, we’ve already set this charming pair of bunnies on the long table in my Brown Room. They sit next to this vase of iridescent peacock tail feathers from my peacocks here at the farm. The males shed their tail feathers every year after mating season.
A number of guests included colleagues from QVC. I showed them my Green Parlor, where I like to display houseplants and flowers whenever I entertain. As you know, Kevin loves flowers. Do you have a copy of our newest book, “Martha’s Flowers: A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering and Enjoying” – we worked so hard on this book – I am so excited it is finally out. https://www.amazon.com/Marthas-Flowers-Practical-Gathering-Enjoying/dp/0307954773
They loved the trio of begonias in the corner, with their delicate blooms high above the foliage.
Kevin took this snapshot of me with my darling cats, Princess Peony and her sister, Empress Tang.
I led the group to my main greenhouse where we saw begonias and this peperomia.
I purchased this knobby cactus late last fall during a business trip to Phoenix – I just love its interesting shape. You can see another photo of this plant on my Instagram page @MarthaStewart48.
Kevin took a photo of me holding the other interesting cactus I bought during that same trip. I am so happy to have this plant as part of my collection of succulents.
I love succulents. If you like growing plants, but don’t really have the time to care for them properly, consider growing succulents. Succulents require very little maintenance and are able to survive prolonged drought because they store moisture in their fleshy stems, roots, or leaves.
Have you seen these plants on Kevin’s Instagram page @Seenby Sharkey? Senecio rowleyanus, commonly known as string-of-pearls or string-of-beads, is a creeping, perennial, succulent vine belonging to the family Asteraceae.
Here is a great photo Kevin took of the hallway leading from my greenhouse to the adjoining headhouse.
Inside the headhouse, the work center of a greenhouse, I store many pots including this selection of Guy Wolff clay pots. I love Guy’s pottery, and have hundreds and hundreds of his handmade vessels. http://www.guywolff.com/
Kevin also took this photo in front of my Hay Barn, where I have about 220-trees waiting to be planted. I will share the planting process in a future blog.
I also toured the group through my citrus greenhouse – a smaller hoop house located between my Equipment Barn and vegetable greenhouse where I keep another large collection of citrus plants.
The tour proceeded down the long allee of boxwood, where I stopped for this photo with two of my dogs – Creme Brulee and Bete Noire, my wonderful young French Bulldogs.
One of my favorite photos in this gallery is this one taken in the center of my stable, where we are keeping various tropicals for the winter. These palms usually sit outside the stable during summer.
Visiting the stable is always a big treat for guests – everyone loves visiting my string of equines, which consists of five Friesians, one Fell pony, and three Sicilian donkeys.
Here is the sunken garden just behind my Summer House. Precious English boxwood are still tucked away underneath their burlap shrouds.
Back inside my kitchen – the tiny beak of a peachick chipping its way out of its shell. Chicks remain in the incubator until they have totally hatched. Then they are moved to a slightly larger enclosure where they can start to eat, drink and walk around.
Many of you may have seen this giant cast iron sugar kettle. I keep two as fire pits at the farm. They add such a nice accent to the landscape and have always been fun conversation pieces during gatherings.
And here is one of the most popular images – this lovely view of my beautiful old apple trees in my large paddock. This shot is wonderful any time of year.
And finally, a fun photo of me on my expansive porch as the snow continues to fall. Thanks for the great gallery of pictures, Kevin. And remember to see more of his images on Instagram @SeenbySharkey.
