Planting New Trees At The Farm
Today, the last Friday in April, is Arbor Day in New York State. Arbor is Latin for tree and this is a holiday where people are encouraged to plant and care for trees. J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska newspaper editor who served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture, organized the first Arbor Day in Nebraska in 1872. It's estimated that one million trees were planted on that day. After losing so many of my tall and stately trees to Hurricane Sandy last October, I was inspired to celebrate this special occasion. I thought it would be highly appropriate to plant a tree - actually seven trees.
